It’s officially autumn, and there are so many reasons to celebrate the new season. The weather is less restrictive if you suffer from asthma or heart disease, so going for a walk is pleasant, your grandchildren are bringing you their crafts made from fallen leaves and twigs, and best of all, some of the summertime harvest is being canned so you can enjoy berry and peach preserves for a little longer (there are so many options for diabetics as well!)

The team at Milestone Health Services Halton believes in supporting local businesses and farms, so we’re going to get out and enjoy everything our region has to offer. Hope to see you and your families out there!

Farmers feed cities

Halton Region and Burlington are lucky to be part of a farming community that produces amazing, local fruits and vegetables, and offers family entertainment like animal learning areas, pony and wagon rides, corn roasts, picnic areas and a big breath of the outdoors.

All the hard work that farmers put into their fields and orchards is now paying off, showing their trophies in the form of sweet corn, crispy apples and enough squash to stock your cellar. Don’t forget that Thanksgiving is also around the corner, so now is a great time to get out and visit our local farms to stock up on produce and homemade treats. Many farms also offer recipe ideas for you and your family to try.

Most farms are wheelchair accessible, and some (like Chudleigh’s) offer accessible restrooms too! Call ahead to check if motorized scooters are safe to operate.

Each farm has something unique to offer

Andrew’s Scenic Acres in Halton Hills has a winery that makes the most delicious fruit wines and is one of the few places that grows fantastic elderberries (which are great antioxidants and can help keep you healthy). You can join a tour of the farm as well.

Hutchinson Farm in Burlington offers a wide variety of wildflowers so you can make your own centrepiece for family gatherings, and they sell all kinds of garlic.

Visit their websites to check for hours of operation, what produce is available and to get directions.

Keeping active

If you are a senior who has difficulty moving around, you may enjoy autumn because you don’t have to worry about snow and ice covering sidewalks, which not only makes the safety factor go up, it also makes wheelchair access a breeze. Remember to be aware of slippery concrete when it rains.

Layering your clothing can make the outdoor experience less stressful because you won’t overheat, and if you have poor circulation, the right pair of socks and shoes can make walking or motoring about more comfortable.
