The Academy Awards ceremony (also knows as the Oscars) will take place this weekend, February 26, 2017.  The team at Milestone Health Services Halton loves going to the movies, and we’ll be watching the Oscars with our popcorn and treats close at hand.

How do you remember?

This year, the stories that filmmakers have decided to tell have really touched on many historical events or themes that we felt spanned a variety of experiences:

  • Hacksaw Ridge tells the story of a courageous soldier who during World War II saved lives as a medic
  • Hidden Figures pays homage to the smart, capable women of colour who helped NASA make substantial scientific progress
  • La La Land brought the dreams of young artists working for their big break to the screen in a romantic, musical way and giving
  • Jackie tells the story of life after the death of John F. Kennedy, with painstaking attention to detail when it comes to costumes
  • Loving is a historical drama about an interracial couple who challenged the law that prohibited their marriage

There are many more films (click here for details) but as you can see from this short list, they tell the stories that many of our beloved clients have witnessed in their lifetime. We love hearing their stories, and sometimes it feels as though they’ve allowed us to be a part of their life movie.

Each of us remembers a piece of history in our own way, and we’re sure that these films have sparked debates about history and art. Join us on Twitter (our account is @HomeCareHalton.) We’d love to hear your thoughts on this years’ Oscar-nominated films, or if you’d like to share your own story, we always love hearing from you!

Let’s go to the movies

Have you had the chance to go to your local theatre to see any of the nominated films? We love that the Oakville Cineplex offers accessible theatres for wheelchairs and, for moviegoers who have difficulty hearing, several assistive devices are available.

Our caregivers can help you enjoy cultural pursuits such as going to the movies, taking in an art exhibit or seeing a play. Just talk to us about your interests and we can help you plan your activity, taking into consideration any health care needs you may have.
